Thanks to social media platform TikTok and the coronavirus pandemic, rollerskating has seen a surge in popularity both here and across the world.

“Definitely over lockdown … I think everyone was just looking for a hobby,” says Auckland skating coach Macarena Carrascosa, whose classes are now completely booked out every day.

Watch the video above as KEA Kids News reporter Latisha Willems, 12, of Albany Junior High School meets one teacher whose skating TikToks are hugely popular, and finds out why kids can’t get enough of the sport.

Also in this episode we meet Harper Heta, a young wheelchair user and much-admired leader of her school’s kapa haka group, who is set to be the star of a new calendar.
