The Origin of Hey Macarena
Hey Macarena was started in 2016 by Macarena Carrascosa with the initial thought of helping Aotearoa’s current competitive artistic roller skaters. In 2018, I started hosting workshops along with Sarah Butler and other coaches from around the country.
At the time, roller skating was just starting to pick up again and recreational skating was just building. To encourage this growth, I started getting more and more interested in events and classes to cater for this new wave of skaters.
In 2020, I decided I wanted to devote all of Hey Macarena to recreation skating and events. I’m now hosting more classes and planning exciting events so we can all have FUN on wheels and learn this new hobby!
Background
My family moved to Aotearoa from Argentina in 2003. I took up roller skating when I was 4 years old and never stopped! I’ve been to the NZ Artistic Roller Skating National Championships (2004-2018), Oceanias (2008-2018), three World Championships for Junior Solo Dance (2011-2013), America’s Cup (2019) and World Roller Games for Senior Solo Dance (2019). My highest World Ranking was 7th place in 2012 in Junior Solo Dance.
I completed a Bachelor of Science double major in Psychology and Sport and Exercise Science in 2015.
Coaching
At the start of 2016, I joined the High Performance Coaches Commission. I’m a support coach helping to improve the level of roller skating in New Zealand. Since 2016 I have focused a lot more on my coaching, hosting workshops to upskill roller skaters from around Auckland and the upper North Island.
In 2018, I helped initiate the North Shore Artistic Roller Skating Club where I am the president and head coach. We are based at ActivZone Indoor Sports Arena in Glenfield on Auckland’s North Shore. We teach all level and all ages roller skating classes.
I also started teaching adult roller skating classes after I noticed an increase of adults at our learn to skate classes. These have now become very popular and often book out weeks in advance! I cater for all levels thanks to my awesome coaching team. We love to keep these classes casual and fun!
I am passionate about giving back to the sport that has given me so much. Roller skating is a huge part of my life and I don’t know where I would be without the national and international friendships I have made through the years. I have found my passion in coaching and being a mentor to young skaters to help them reach their full potential, and I pride myself in having a holistic approach to coaching.

My Interests
When I’m not coaching, you can find me in the kitchen cooking up something yum to eat or planning out my next skating event or class. I also enjoy coffee dates, naps and working out. I enjoy being outdoors and love running through Aotearoa’s natural bush tracks.
I love reading young adult fiction books and fantasy or dystopian future novels. Some of my favourites are Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter series (all of them!), Harry Potter, Hunger Games and the Delirium series.
Another big part of my life are podcasts! I listen to them pretty much constantly when I’m getting ready or driving around. Some of my favourite include The Dream, Girls Gotta Eat, This American Life, Not Another True Crime, You’re Wrong About, 99% invisible, Sport Thoughts (great for coaches!), Dating Straight, Just Between Us, Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations….I could go on and on!
